When cutting your shingles, make cuts on the ground. Try to find an even base to do this on. lay your feet out, around 30 minutes before you need it, so it has a chance to flatten out. A wooden board is best because it’s flat, and even, will prevent tears in your felt and protect your lawn from any chemicals that might leech out of the shed felt. Replacing The Old Damaged Felt Once you have added the shingles to both slopes of your roof, you should be ready to apply to ridge detail. For this task, you can use traditional shingles cut to shape or a shingle ridge roll. Felt Roof Ridge Generally we do not see the need for the placement of a membrane (roofing felt or IKO underlay for all garden buildings as it is not generally necessary for leisure buildings and has not been recommended for over 15 years. A base, or a venting layer, is usually installed on a primed, non-combustible substrate. This is generally partially bonded. This is followed by an intermediate layer of the felt roof build-up, a waterproofing membrane. High-performance systems use glass fibre-based membranes coated in oxidised bitumen that is sand finished and fully bonded. A cap sheet is the final layer. These are often coated with APP or SBS rubber modified bitumen. If required, add another roll or two of felt to ensure the roof is completely covered. Always ensure there is at least 5cm of overlap between each sheet, and nail down the felt from the centre outwards as before. 6. Spread adhesive

To seal joints and openings apply a bead of lap mastic around the perimeter edges of overlap sections. On the last cover strip, apply an extra bead to ensure a secure bond.

Felt Roof Ridge

We only supply the best and IKO is the world renowned leader of felt roof shingles. Used all over the world they will protect your log cabin or garden building. We are one of the largest suppliers of IKO across Europe and as such we offer the largest range in the UK. Spread adhesive on the second layer of felt as before, and then place the final layer of felt on top. Again, ensure there are no air bubbles, there is at least 5cm of overlap and there is also overlap around the edges of the roof. 9. Smooth the surface They are recommending IKO Glass Fibre Underlay 20m (Type 3B). This is similar to a standard roofing felt and if you are choosing to use a membrane we would recommend felt over the IKO membrane. Lay the first length of the shed roof felt across the bottom part of the shed roof, ensuring the overhang is there, before nailing the top edge of the felt with galvanised nails. Try to achieve an even gap of around 50cm between each nail. Then fold the edges of the felt around the edges of the roof and nail them into place. 4. Lay the second piece of felt Felt roof repair is relatively easy. The material can simply be patched up if there is a tear or hole in the roof, unlike other roof materials that can have a much more complex and time-consuming repair process. Budget-friendly

Roofing felt is used to achieve a waterproof and durable finish on top of shed roofs, garden building roofs and outhouses. Available as torch-on bitumen felt or self-adhesive bitumen felt, leading manufacturers such as IKO and Icopal make up our range of roofing felt so you can be sure no matter which product you choose that your roofing felt will be of the highest quality. Pat down the surface with a trowel, or by walking on it. This will help to ensure there is a tight fit and that all three layers of felt are bonded together. 10. Add the final layer of adhesive and gravel Our range of roof shingles encompasses felt, bitumen and cedar options, so you can choose the right material for your roof. Shingles in our cedar range include Western Red and Eastern White, or for an impressive finish, you could opt for hexagonal tiles over the more traditional square.Rolled roofing will not make your structure any more attractive. It is generally considered a less attractive roofing material than shingles or other types of roofing systems.Homeowner's associations in gated communities may not allow the installation of any structure with rolled roofing, even outbuildings. Then fit your shingle underlay onto the exposed roof. Ensure that your underlay extends beyond the edges of the roof by around 50mm. The underlay will be applied in strips, with each strip overlapping the previous one by at least 75mm. Then turn down the edges and nail it at 500mm centres. Preparing The Roof For Felt Shingles Rolled roofing is very adaptable and can be cut into 12-inch by 36-inch strips to act as hips and ridges or 9-inch strips for eaves and rakes. Bitumen felt shingles are manufactured by pressing granules into a glass fibre bitumen felt strip. These strips feature designs like ‘ square butt’, which is a simple square pattern on the finished roof, or ‘ hexagonal’ which offers more contemporary hexagonal finishes. You’re also able to find ‘ half round’ style bitumen felt shingles which are the most traditional types of shingles that give a scalloped look.

Next, measure the surface of the shed roofing to calculate how much felt you’ll need – don’t forget to add an extra 5-7.5cm for overlaps at the edges and the gables. Generally, if felting a pitched shed roof you’ll require 3 pieces of felt – 1 for each side and then one to overlap the two edges, but this may vary depending on the size of the shed roof and the width of the felt rolls. 3. Lay the first piece of feltFelt is an incredibly popular roofing material amongst DIYers and roofing professionals due to its ease of installation and budget-friendly costs. Felt roofs are most commonly used on shed roofs, garage roofs and other outbuildings, but can also be used on flat roofs such as on small extensions and porches. To carry out the ridge detailing cut the individual tabs from a strip mitred by 40mm. On the roof again use a chalk line or straight edge to ensure correct positioning and alignment. Starting at one end locate the tap with the mitred edge, pointing along the ridge. Nail into position, ensuring that each ridge shingle overlaps the previous one, exposing about 145mm.
