We'll have to see what happens in the coming months. Hopefully, the arrival of two more desktop graphics cards in the form of the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti will alleviate the shortages a bit. The hashrate limiter can't hurt either, at least if you're only interested in gaming performance, and the drop in mining profitability might help. But we're far from being out of the shortage woods. I say that for obvious reasons: the graphics card market is anything but healthy today and finding any modern graphics card at MSRP is a struggle. That said, you will at least be able to find the RTX 3070 Ti for a brief moment in time at MSRP, which will inevitably end up as one of the cheapest prices for that graphics card you'll find for the foreseeable future. The basic idea behind the RTX 3070 Ti is simple enough. Nvidia takes the GA104 GPU that powers the RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti, only this time it's the full 48 SM variant of the chip, and pairs it with GDDR6X. While Nvidia could have tried doing this last year, both the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 were already struggling to get enough GDDR6X memory, and delaying by nine months allowed Nvidia to build up enough inventory of both the GPU and memory for this launch. Nvidia has also implemented its Ethereum hashrate limiter, basically cutting mining performance in half on crypto coins that use the Ethash / Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm. While gaming, this RTX 3070 Ti managed to boost up to 1980 MHz but averaged around 1920-1930 MHz. Not bad at all, considering that’s 8% faster than the reference design. The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is based on the same GA104 silicon as the RTX 3070, but NVIDIA made two major changes. First, they maxed out the GPU, enabling all 6,144 CUDA cores as opposed to 5,888 on the RTX 3070. Second, they installed faster 19 Gbps GDDR6X memory instead of 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory. The memory sub-system alone sees a significant 35% uplift in bandwidth. The memory size is still 8 GB.

Generally, 4K gaming enjoys memory bandwidth, and comparatively the RTX 3070 Ti has that in swathes versus the RTX 3070 or GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. It's a card more naturally inclined to the demanding Ultra HD resolution, but importantly it's also able to offer a little more bandwidth than the RX 6800—608GB/s to 512GB/s—and that sees both cards competing within a frame or two of each other within many of our benchmarks. This is where the Suprim X dominates its competition. Considering it surpasses the Gaming OC in terms of performance and holds on its own against Palit’s model, having better thermals than both cards is pretty impressive. Technically, the RTX 3070 Ti can still play all of the test games at 4K, just not always at more than 60 fps. Nearly half of the games we tested came in below that mark, with Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion being the two lowest scores — and they're still in the mid-40s. With temperatures that low, you might assume that the fan curve would be pretty aggressive and result in very high noise levels. That isn’t the case here. Not surprisingly, while 4K ultra gaming gave the RTX 3070 Ti its biggest lead over the RTX 3070 (11%), it also got its biggest loss (17%) against the 3080. 4K also narrowed the gap between the 3070 Ti and the RX 6800, as AMD's Infinity Cache starts to hit its limits at 4K. Ray tracing comes with a hefty hit to performance, but once again Nvidia's RT Cores work wonders for mitigating the impact in most games. That's pretty toasty by today's standards. It's still a happy enough medium for any case with decent airflow, but the 3070 Ti has been the hottest of all the Founders Edition cards in our testing. In my mind this comes down to the decision to adopt only pristine GA104 GPUs for the RTX 3070 Ti. That's necessarily expensive and Nvidia nets only a small increase in CUDA Cores with the full graphics silicon; just 5%. Nvidia therefore needs to search out further performance wins elsewhere to attempt to hit its competitive goals versus AMD.

The Overclockers Difference

Importantly, though, these RT Cores are better suited for the task than AMD's equivalent Ray Accelerators, and that makes for a better ray tracing card in the RTX 3070 Ti than the Radeon RX 6800 by some margin. The RTX 3070 Ti's raw RT performance is actually superior to even the RX 6900 XT with 80 Ray Accelerators, although the rasterised performance of the RX 6900 XT will see it retain the performance lead in ray-traced games, as these blend both ray tracing and shader cores.

As long as your case has clearance for 267mm x 112mm (L x W) with two expansion slots free it will be able to accommodate a Founders Edition RTX 3070 Ti. Compared to AMD's RX 6000 cards, the 3070 Ti easily beats the RX 6700 XT, but it comes in 6% behind the RX 6800 — which, of course, means it trails the RX 6800 XT as well.The card also tends to distance itself a little from the RTX 3070 at this resolution, although the RX 6800 largely remains out of reach. The RDNA 2 architecture is playing to its strengths at 1440p—the RX 6800, specifically, was built to conquer at this resolution, and still does. That's also two more RT Cores than the RTX 3070, although those don't count for a whole lot in ray-traced performance. The two perform near-enough identically in the DXR Feature Test.
