I can't believe I never read this before now, but damn, HAVING read it now, I also appreciate it more. Students of Zen would do well to read the book, particularly the final Ring - entitled The Void. Afterward the perceptive student would take up an individual sport - not necessarily fencing, tennis would do just as well - and give up trying to solve koans. After all, even the Masters say that the more you study Zen the further from enlightenment you get and there can be little doubt that Musashi was a master. Know the smallest things and the biggest things, the shallowest things and the deepest things. As if it were a straight road mapped out on the ground... These things cannot be explained in detail. From one thing, know ten thousand things. When you attain the Way of Strategy there will not be one thing you cannot see. You must study hard.

Originating during the medieval period of Japan, Kendo has its roots in the samurai’s pursuit of perfecting their sword-fighting skills for both self-defense and battlefield combat. However, as Japan entered an era of peace during the Edo period (1603-1868), the practice of Kendo shifted its focus from warfare to the development of one’s character and moral values. It transformed into a spiritual discipline that emphasized self-discipline, respect, and the cultivation of a strong mind and body. Rigorous training sessions There are subjects and views that on the surface seem to to be contradictory. Musashi speaks of "venerating" the gods and the Buddhas he then speaks of total self reliance especially not appealing to or depending on the "gods or Buddhas". The most commonly used phrase (in translation) is "this should be investigated thoroughly".

Just as one's spirit should be balanced, one's various techniques be honed to a perfectly balanced demeanor. In terms of stance, much like balance within the trooper, Musashi notes that stance is an important part of strategy, or battle: Adopt a stance with the head erect, neither hanging down, nor looking up, nor twisted. This is part of what Musashi notes as wedging in.

The Water Book

The timeline of the Legends of the Five Rings setting can be influenced by players of the collectible card game, and to a lesser extent the role-playing game, with the winners of major tournaments making pivotal decisions that become canonical history in future products. The most significant example of this was the Race for the Throne event, which took place through 2007 and 2008, which allowed players of both the collectible card game and the role-playing game to affect the storyline of their Clan by earning points in various Spheres of influence. [1] This one is on the recommended reading list of Dr. Michael Gervais's Compete To Create "Finding Your Best" course, which I just finished. [As a side note; I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and would recommend it to anyone reading this review.] The Book of Wind chapter is something of a pun, since the Japanese character for "wind" and can also mean "style" (e.g., of martial arts). It discusses what Musashi considers to be the failings of various contemporary schools of sword fighting.

In regards to the gaze of someone, he notes that a person must be able to perceive that which is all around him without moving their eyeballs noticeably, which is said to be a skill which takes an enormous amount of practice to perfect. He notes that this is again one of the most important parts of strategy, as well as being able to see things which are close, such as the technique of an enemy. It is also used to perceive things far away, such as arriving troops or enemies, as that is the precursor to battle. One can then change one's actions according to what one sees.In strategy your spiritual bearing must not be any different from normal. Both in fighting and in everyday life you should be determined though calm.”

Written by the legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto, The Five Rings (c.1645) is more than just a manual on sword-fighting techniques: its Zen philosophy offers tactics and strategies as relevant to personal success today as they were to 17th-century samurai. The Five Rings speaks to every age about the essential roles of harmony and self-mastery in our lives. The Book of Fire chapter refers to the heat of battle, and discusses matters such as different types of timing. Through this academic exploration, we aim to delve into the multifaceted nature of Kendo as a traditional Japanese martial art. By examining its historical evolution, core principles, training methodologies, and cultural significance, we hope to deepen our understanding of Kendo as a discipline that transcends physical combat, serving as a means for personal growth, character development, and the preservation of a rich cultural heritage.
