Description

The type of portable toilet you have can make or break your camping trip. On a broader level, there are three types of camping toilets: Some things in life shouldn’t be complicated too much. The Carplife Bivvy Loo takes that mantra and applies it to one of life’s essential processes. The end result is a camping toilet which does its job well, can be folded away unobtrusively and renders the ‘end product’ biodegradable too – we love the simplicity of it. If you were able to connect the portable toilets to the mains, you should not have any problem cleaning the units. They are easy to clean just like the toilets at home since they have access to the mains plumbing and sewage system. With just a little bit of elbow grease and some bleach, the units should be as good as new.

There is a garbage holding tank with a porta-potty. You have to remove the lid of the tank to make it empty. Furthermore, the toilet is odorless as it has a sealed valve to prevent odors from escaping and is also leakproof. With the hold-down kit, this toilet is very stable, and you won’t have issues sitting on or standing up from the toilet as it won’t wobble. Features For more than 2 people, or for camping trips longer than a weekend, I’d recommend choosing a minimum waste tank capacity of 20 litres. 2. Access to chemical toilet disposal points This separation prevents the need for water or chemicals, and combined with coffee chaff or sawdust, both dries out the waste and masks the smell. Toilet paper should be kept separate as this takes longer to decompose. This loo has recently been redesigned after some owners reported a bad seal between the lid and seat, but our review unit was strong and very comfortable to sit on (mind the silent ‘h’ there). Height is an excellent 41cm off the ground and so you don’t feel like a naughty kid conducting toilet training. Whilst the urine will need to be emptied frequently, the solids can stay in-situ for anything from 4 weeks to a year. If you don’t have access to land for composting, and have small infrequent amounts of waste, you can double-bag the dry solids and dispose in appropriate wastebins.

PBO reader Stefan Leschner says ‘Air Head’ is the way to go. The Air Head compost toilet is a durable, waterless toilet suitable for canalboats, campervans, caravans, yachts and motorhomes. If the toilet is just to be used in moments of desperation then there is no reason why you can’t find a temporary spot inside your tent or campervan to work your magic – we’ve tried this approach and found that it’s a good idea to tell anyone you’re travelling with to keep away in moments like these – danger zone! You can get to know your own family a bit too well under such circumstances!

Different types of camp toilet

So, whether you’re weekending in a marina, alone on an anchorage, DIY-ing in a boatyard or camping with a trailer-sailer there’s a portable toilet for you. If you’re limited on space, a collapsible camping toilet such as the Carplife Bivvy loo is a good idea, as this will fold up easily and include a seat and a waste bag. It probably goes without saying you should only put human waste down your toilet. Disposable nappies, wipes or any other similar items should never enter the system. The SereneLife Portable Porta Potty is a compact, portable travel toilet with an efficient flushing mechanism. It has a 3-way flush nozzle design that can flush more than 50 times with its 3.2 gallons of fresh water tank capacity. The toilet flushes and rinses the bowl with its freshwater reserve leaving it clean. Also, it has a very easy access waste tank that makes disposal to be fast and simple. The extra-large tank on the toilet holds more water than most portable camping toilets, as it can hold up to 5.3 gallons. As a result, transporting this unit is very easy and convenient. This toilet is able to serve most people comfortably and is more suitable than standard camping toilets. Despite its compact size, the Standpsort toilet is still comfortable and very efficient in performance. Features

CampingGaz, the ubiquitous supplier of butane/propane camping gas, sells a range of camping gear, including the Campingaz 20L portable toilet.

Should you get a camping toilet?

The liner bags contain special powder which combines with the waste to produce a neutral end gel. The bags can then be safely disposed of in any bin. This is really useful and means you don’t have to search around for an Elsan point or dog waste bin. Portable toilets come in all shapes and sizes and you need to decide quite early on in the buying process what exactly you are looking for. Do you want a toilet to hide away, or do you want it to feel more sturdy and closer to the comforts of home? At the top end of the market, Thetford’s Porta Potti 565 has an electric (battery-powered) flush or manual. Originally made for anglers, it’s been a gamechanger for wild campers, festival goers and overland drivers. It contains 12 compostable liner bags with sachets of powder, each capable of turning up to 2 litres of waste into manageable gel, plus 40 biodegradable wipes.
