About this deal

In the novel, Teacher represents enlightenment and awareness. Through his interactions with Kofi Billy and Maanan, his use of wee, and his political involvement, Teacher became awakened to truths in the world around him. However, he soon found that these truths precipitate a darker, less hopeful worldview. As Teacher relates, When the man explains that his wife is upset that he turned down the bribe, Teacher remarks that Oyo is justified in her anger. He explains that a man who does not follow the only path open to him looks immature to others. The man thinks he has done nothing wrong but also feels guilty, and Teacher maintains that it is “one of the crimes” to refuse to do what everyone else does. The man thinks of Teacher as free, but Teacher disagrees, saying that he still longs to commune with his loved ones. The two men discuss the rampant corruption that has led to the man’s acquaintances becoming rich and materialistic while he struggles to support his family. They reflect on times when they once felt hopeful. Then they sit in silence, thinking their own thoughts. The title of this work, displayed on the outside of MOCA, alludes to an ancestral village in Nigeria, but it is rendered in a very different setting, namely the urban landscape of downtown Los Angeles. Again, Akunyili Crosby freely mixes various cultural references to great effect, creating a disjuncture but also a bringing-together of different times and places. He joins one rally or another and he even cheers on the leader. However, deception and disappointment soon creep in, engulfing the man with such depressive thoughts that he finds himself anchored in absolute pessimism. There is no solution, there is no hope – all is lost. Ghana, Africa is cursed by disastrous leaders and misses out on one chance after the other to get out of this rut and use its resources to its advantage, once and for all. All hope is lost.

After the boat is given to them, a scene occurs that leads to a military coup, and everyone takes to the streets following the arrest without trial of Nkrumah’s beneficiaries. Koomson flees for his life, leaving his wife behind, but later reassures the man that Estella will be fine. With the help of the condemned man, Koomson is smuggled out of Ghana, leaving Estella behind. My response is that in descriptive fiction, the details are there for a purpose, and if on reading this book any readers feel disgusted with the images of corruption, the only crime they can accuse me of is that of effective writing. To that charge I plead guilty with no attenuating circumstances. best to satisfy their upper-class tastes and mannerisms, but Estella refuses to drink the beer, and the man is thoroughly embarrassed when he has to show Koomson to the community latrine since their house does not have indoor plumbing. The man’s mother-in-law brings up a scheme that she expects will be profitable; she hopes to share ownership of a boat with Koomson, and they form a plan to meet up soon and sign some paperwork.

The pressure to become corrupt continues to mount, but the man refuses to capitulate. Despite feeling immense pain at such refusal, and having a guilty conscience as his values are turned upside down, he hears voices whispering to him stipulating that it is wrong not to steal.
