I used my Minidsp SHD to play the same channel on both speakers. I used REW decibel meter to adjust the volume levels so that they are within 1 db of each other. I used on preset to apply the PEQs to the R3, and another to apply it to the Linton, allowing me to switch between them with about a 1-2 sec gap. The room response must be averaged to recognize trends in the summation of direct and reflected signals at the microphone. The resulting curves must not be taken as a 1:1 representation of what is heard as loudness at different frequencies. The room response gives a picture of the steady state SPL, where sound generation and sound dissipation in the room have reached their equilibrium." -Linkwitz Sound Power represents all of the sounds arriving at the listening position after any number of reflections from any direction. It is the weighted rms average of all 70 measurements, with individual measurements weighted according to the portion of the spherical surface that they represent.

the performance benefit of a 3-way speaker and better, deeper bass with the 8in woofer with larger volume cabinet.I also took my chances with some sort of short interviews with the engineering brains behind the speakers, Peter Cormeau, and the Audiolab equipment, Jan Ertner, which are echoed by a personal communication I had with Dave, an Audiophile Style user from Iowa, who owns these transducers and talked to me about his own experience with them. On axis, the R3 definitely seems far more focused than the Linton. The Linton feels warmer/fatter, and the sound does not seem to come from a single point like it does with the R3. On axis I preferred the Linton due to its warmer sound signature. For friends of the silver disc, however, the CDT may be a reasonably priced way to play their existing digital music, bought or burned, in excellent quality. It could also be a perfect solution for those who have never owned a CD transport before, especially as you can discover a lot of CD's nowadays in the 2nd Hand Music Stores where you usually buy your vinyl. One difficult aspect of speaker design is how to handle what we call the ‘baffle-step’. This is the frequency at which the speaker enclosure stops radiating only forwards (hemi-spherically) and radiates sound all around. This causes a step in the frequency/power response of the speaker of up to 6dB. Naturally this is audibly obvious.

The treble can sound a touch bright. I played around with positioning and found that turning the speakers about 10° off-axis (firing out into the room; not cross-firing across the room) worked best to balance the HF with soundstage width. with modern computer optimised drive units for a specifically tailored response. In more general terms, the new Linton’s are meant for medium sized rooms, meaning in the 16ft-20ft region. However, our listening room is far larger (6550cu ft) and they still had the power to fill it. In room measurements at 3.8m. Definately more bass than the D2 but meets a Harman style curve well. Better match in midrange than the D2 but more upper treble rolloff. Not an issue for my 52 year old ears. Note used 35 Hz rolloff in curve for Lintons, 40 Hz for D2s.

Of the three usage options, I was the least impressed with the Power Amp, though in combination with my NAD BEE 165 preamp I couldn't hear any noticeable difference, neither for the analog nor with the phono preamp's utilization, which was “en par” with the MM section of the 6000A, both having the same input impedance and slightly different gain and SNR measurements. The NAD, of course, offers the MC option as well. Rounding things off comes the tweeter which is – natch! – not a metal dome. It is a standard I in (25mm) textile dome that covers high frequencies smoothly – without sharpness or ringiness. SOUND QUALITY

Wharfedale specifies the Linton’s sensitivity as 90dB at 1m for 2.0V input rather than 2.83V, the latter equivalent to 1W with an 8 ohm speaker. My estimate with the usual 2.83V was lower, at 88.1dB(B)/m, though this is a little higher than the average of all the loudspeakers I have measured. The impedance is specified as 6 ohms; the solid trace in fig.1 shows that the Linton’s impedance is close to 6 ohms for much of the audioband. However, the minimum magnitude is 3.4 ohms at 130Hz, and there is a demanding combination of 5 ohms magnitude and –46° electrical phase angle (dotted trace) at 83Hz. The Wharfedale will work best with amplifiers that are comfortable driving 4 ohms. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 29th November 2023. The design, a clear reference to glorious tradition, combines noble English understatement with the legendary British sound and convinces with modern technology and a multitude of possibilities. Both Audiolab devices present themselves as a perfect starting point into an audiophile future or alternatively as solutions to fill gaps in the audiophile chain, each as an option at a modest price. Construction seems good overall and I like that the midrange driver has its own enclosure inside the speaker. Not only does it have its own enclosure but the enclosure is round. Meaning there is less chance for standing waves compared to big rectangular speakers. There is also a liberal amount of insulation in the enclosure. Overall, I am really happy to see such thoughtfulness put into the build quality of this speaker.Taller and wider than contemporary standmount speakers, the Lintons have a unique presence. That ‘big box’ style is successfully offset by the real wood finishes and dark grille (leave this on for the recommended sound balance), making them less intrusive in your room than you might expect. That bigger, boxier design also means deep, effortless bass. Wharfedale manufactures every piece of the Linton Heritage, including bolts and capacitors, in its 1.5 million-square-foot factory in Jiangxi Province, China. (Wharfedale's parent company, International Audio Group, is based in Shenzhen, China.) All design work takes place in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK, where Wharfedale maintains a 50-person research and development team.
