The Nikon Coolpix P950 excels for its colossal zoom range and lens quality, but its image quality is disappointing in 2020. Only if you absolutely must have this much zoom reach is it worth considering, and even then the price is tough to justify.

Note: Be sure to copy the “firmware” folder to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory. Aside from the versatility of the zoom range, easily my favorite features are the image stabilization (more on that in a moment) and the electronic viewfinder. Offering 2.3 million dots, the OLED finder is bright, contrasty, and a world away from the P900's EVF, which was prone to 'rainbow-tearing'. It's a really impressive upgrade, even if it is probably one of the main things that contributed to making the P950 more expensive than its predecessor. Seems there are many people that are more interested in sensor size rather than going out taking pictures. That is why we don't take pixel peepers seriously at all, as photography -being an image captured with a camera and printed on a piece of paper or adequate surface or the showing/presentation of the whole image captured on a screen- as a form of art is perceived by ourselves through a "lens" and a "sensor" called eye, the combination of which cannot exceed the equivalent of a so considered as "perfect", but 8 Mp -at its best- camera.

eno2...if you can recommend a smartphone that can take same quality photos as ANAYV can take with the with the P950 at 1500 - 2000 mm FF equivalent, I will be glad to add it to my collection. These 1/2.3" sensor super zoom cameras are a trade off in quality vs quantity. No kidding the expensive gear will do better because it will have a larger sensor and larger pixel pitch in which the blurring effects of diffraction is less evident. Colors look good in thumbnails, but once you take a closer look at the big JPEGs, everything is fuzzy and noisy. Base ISO and RAW editing don't look like they help much either. I guess that's the price to pay for such a zoom range. The Nikon Coolpix P950 has a single SD UHS-I memory card slot. It would have been nice to perhaps see some UHS-II compatibility here to boost the frame rate beyond the 7fps offered.
