About this deal

Ever since that damn campaign was launched two years ago, it had only ever been a matter of time, for Beth’s compadres – Dulcie and Samira and the rest of them – were typical thirty- and forty-something Silver Vale women and mostly mums, which was to say committed to the point of psychotic.

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish will be published in Australia in early March 2023 by Simon & Schuster, but available elsewhere already. He remembered waking up next to her in the morning with horror in his heart, and how, after dressing, he’d been irresistibly drawn to the bedroom window, which had a view across the road of steel barriers at the top of the steps, the tangled wilderness beyond. The trail. Right.’ This was as much as he could muster before his body went into a kind of arrest, a frankly terrifying sensation, as if he might look down and see his limbs crumble to dust in front of him.I loved The Only Suspect: a heady dose of mid Nineties nostalgia, with trademark whiplash twists and satire. Louise Candlish has surpassed her own, always high standards. Quite possibly her best yet I live in a South London neighbourhood not unlike the one in my novels with my husband, teenage daughter, and our fox-red Labrador Bertie. No surprise who the bad boy was and even in the end, he didn't get his just desserts. And neither really did she. (Whatever her name was-she had that many.) The Only Suspect kept me guessing all the way through. It’s the book version of a Rubik’s Cube with so many unexpected twists and turns. An adrenaline-burner for sure!” Candlish has a distinctive take on the contemporary psychological thriller. She skilfully mixes a droll portrayal of middle-class London suburban life with some extremely cunning plots -- Mail on Sunday

I'm blown away by how good it is. A gripping tale of love, secrets and deception - it's the best psychological thriller I've read in a long time' Mark Edwards The Only Suspect is a perfectly executed thriller, an unpredictable ride that will enthral both fans and new readers alike. I had no idea where this was headed, and loved every minute of it. Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife, Beth, in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most extroverted guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour.

Sorry.’ She was right, his attitude was weird, even for him, and it jolted him that she’d noticed early on. He thought he’d been more careful than that. ‘I’m just, I don’t know, a bit cynical about the whole eco-community thing.’ Such a vivid sense of place, a gripping plot, elegantly told, and a twist that left me reeling - brilliant!

The Only Suspect Marianne (Wollongong, 02, Australia)’s review of The Only Suspect

The characterisation is very good, there’s a good range, from one who is gullible, one who seems guileless, one to fear, one or two to clench your fists in irritation and one master duper. The author certainly keeps you on your toes with this bunch! A nature trail is being constructed near Alex and Beth’s home. Most of the neighbourhood is looking forward to this by Alex is terrified that a secret will be unearthed. PS: I never give trigger warnings, but you may get a laugh out of this one: I think I have a phobia of house guests that overstay their welcome, because there was a part in the book where I felt myself becoming very anxious, with sweating palms and a racing heart, and perhaps discovering some slightly murderous tendencies within my own heart towards one particular character. If you share that sentiment, have a stiff drink ready before you delve in! I was excited by the developments around the 60% mark, but only briefly, and even the twist towards the end failed to rekindle my interest. If you want a suspenseful summer read that carries its own unique formula then this is a book that will linger in your thoughts for some time after. This novel is a bit like driving up a mountain in which it gradually builds momentum then about mid-way through it reaches a heart-thumping pace and you begin to notice the many twists and turns. Coral, VIC, 4 Stars Alex isn’t particularly likeable and I suspect Candlish does this on purpose. He implies he kinda ‘fell into’ his relationship and marriage to Beth. This phrase stayed with me, “… he caught himself wondering how he had come to have this wife and not the one he’d once fantasized about.” #charming Since she asked, he had assumed it was a one-night thing, but, well, she’d insisted on pursuing him and eventually he’d thought, Let her have me if it means that much to her. (He didn’t say that in his wedding speech, of course, which had been barely a speech, in keeping with the discreet mood of the occasion; he’d kept the whole photos thing to a minimum, too.)
