The chromaticity chart's overall pattern strongly resembled that of the Lepow 15.6-inch USB-C Portable Monitor, also a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS panel, which had the same blue point outside the sRGB space and a curtailed color gamut toward the purple. The Lepow did a tad better than the AOC, covering 65.4 percent of sRGB, but then we seldom see desktop monitors that cover less than 90 percent of sRGB. These kinds of mobile panels are generally for productivity use, not Photoshop finery. If you don’t see a message, you can assume that the montior isn’t getting power, so that is where you need to start. If you are getting a message or you see lights, then the power source isn’t the issue. If you haven’t changed your settings, you want to reboot into Safe Mode to bypass issues and fix the resolution in your settings. By default, Windows will use a lower display resolution, which is more likely to work. Overdrive is set to ‘off’ as standard, and for much of the time you’ll probably want to leave it that way. Ghosting – that unsightly blur caused by fast-moving objects on digital displays – was very noticeable on this video , but we found that bumping up the I1601FWUX to its medium overdrive setting mitigated this. The AOC I1601FWUX is a pretty solid performer when it comes to being a portable display. It is slim and light enough to carry around with a laptop and doesn't require an external power source. It doesn't produce the best image but it can work to get the job down for most tasks.

Contrast ratio is 565:1, which isn’t ideal. Generally, a decent level of contrast for an IPS monitor is anything close to 1000:1 or higher, so this is way off the mark. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example. As we said above, you can get around this somewhat by upping contrast and overdrive, but it still isn’t perfect. Using our colorimeter, we tested the I1601FWUX at its default brightness level of 70/100. Colour temperature was around 6931K, so a little over the 6500K ideal. At no point did the I1601FWUX look particularly cool, though. The illumination looks even and when a 256 shade gradient was applied for testing, the display looked relatively even with only a few areas that you could tell there was a transition. As far as viewing angles, the picture can get a little dim when not viewed straight on, but you can still get a good idea of what you are looking at on the screen, regardless of which angle you might be viewing it from. Some might have problems with a screen that has a response time of 5ms, but in my daily use which included writing, YouTube, and some light movie watching through Netflix, this wasn't an issue.

Although supporting USB Type-C is great, it would have been even better if it could have also supported USB Type-A to USB Type-C. This monitor did not work when trying to hook it up using an adapter or even just a Type-A to Type-C cable. A couple years from now this might not be such a huge issue but Type-A is still a lot more common currently, so the option would have been nice. AOC’s I1601FWUX is very much a plug and play device. It’s light, weighing just 0.82kg, and measures 235.2 x 376.1 x 8.3mm, so you can sling it in your laptop bag without it taking up too much room or adding much weight. If you think the issue is with your monitor, connect another spare monitor to your PC and see if it works. If it doesn’t, then you have something going on within your tower. If you have worked through the other fixes and you are still getting a no signal message, then you need to try something a little more on the hardware side of things. You may need to try to connect your PC to a different monitor or your monitor to a different PC to see if the issues continue or if it is the combination of the two.

The AOC monitor doesn't require any additional software. The company covers the portable monitor with its standard warranty, which offers three years of coverage but only one year for the LED panel. The monitor's port and interface selection is perfect in its minimalism, with just a single USB Type-C port and a single button for power. In normal operation, it gives you everything you need to get up and running, and not a single thing you don't. If you aren’t getting a signal to your AOC monitor, it could be that your computer is actually ignoring the graphics output from your PC or it is sending them elsewhere. If this is the case, the monitor is trying to pull information from a place where there is none or the information is going to a place where it cannot be displayed. The display has a couple of interesting features, including the ability to rotate 90 degrees with automatic pivoting. There's no need to adjust the screen orientation or tweak your display settings. Just set up the display on its side, and you get a portable screen with a vertical orientation.

A Foldable, Magnetic Stand

Once you have the right drivers installed, you’re done. Just plug it in and it will shimmer into life, with a big AOC logo glowing proudly. Typically, the I1601FWUX takes about 3-5 seconds to power up, so not long at all. The AOC I1601FWUX doesn’t support HDR. That’s good news. A few monitors in the same price range claim HDR support, but don’t be fooled—they offer little more than the ability to accept an HDR signal and don’t offer a passable HDR experience. AOC’s decision to keep HDR off the feature list is an honest, accurate representation of the monitor’s capabilities. AOC I1601FWUX: Motion Performance
