This will be my first foil shaver, so some questions may seem trivial. Currently, these are the most popular models available in the USA and Europe as well: 5090cc, 5040s, 5030s, 5140s, 5145s,5190cc/5195cc. The Braun Series 5 5145s comes with an auto-sensing motor that automatically reads beard density and adjusts the shaving power accordingly. This is a very new technology for Braun Series 5 that was not implemented in the older generation shavers. Braun designed the existing Series 5 models with 3 pressure-sensitive shaving elements as a result; the Braun 5145s is highly efficient for sensitive skin. I am in the market for a new electric shaver. I want to get the closest fastest shave I can while still meeting some other requirements. Cost is not an issue, but I’ve ruled out some of the top-end shavers like the Braun Series 9 and the Panasonic Arc 5 because of the large size of the head. I have sideburns and often a mustache or goatee too, and I think trying to follow the edges or shave the space between my sideburns and mustache/goatee would be like trying to parallel park a school bus! I was also very excited about the new series 7/6/5 family, but because of the larger frame around the head I have ruled those out too. I don’t want a bulky head obstructing my view of the foils as I try to shave along the edges of my beard.

You wrote in the article that you don’t recommend Braun for wet shaving, because manual cleaning is problematic. But does wet shaving itself with an electric razor (especially Braun series 5) give a better effect than a dry shave? And can wet shaving take place e.g. in the shower, but without any foam/gel? As mentioned previously, using a Series 5 with shaving cream will always imply a manual cleaning, even in the case of the recently released wet & dry models that include the cleaning station. For these reasons, I don’t consider the updated models to be a clear step up from the previous Series 5, so either would be an equally good option. I usually recommend getting a cc model with the Series 5, 7 and 9 if it fits within the buyer’s budget. However, the cleaning station is there for the convenience, so if you want to save some money, getting a solo model like the 5040s is definitely a viable option as well.

The station is nice to have, but again I think it’s worth getting when the price difference compared to the solo variations isn’t that high. And that’s not the case here. You can clean any of these shavers manually with some liquid soap and warm tap water.

I think you should get either the Series 5 5145s or a Panasonic Arc 3 like the ES8103S or ES-LT41-K (whichever is cheaper).
