Danny Bergara – The Man from Uruguay

It’s possible that, in a little way, I helped open the way for the likes of Mourinho and [Sven-Goran] Eriksson,” Bergara told Observer Sport Monthly in 2006. “Now though, there are too many foreigners in English football.” For the 1998-99 season, he was manager of Grantham Town, who had just won promotion to the Southern League Premier Division. He was brought by the club’s controversial chairman Reg Brearley. Bergara also managed the Brunei national team and the England Under-18 and Under-20 sides, with a World Youth Cup win also to his name. While Bergara was registered as a lorry loader after moving to the UK with his English wife, his actual job was completely different. Instead of working for a haulage company owned by the Luton Town chairman, he plied his trade at Kenilworth Road as the Hatters’ youth team coach. In this Spanish name, the first or paternal surname is Bergaraand the second or maternal family name is Medina. At the end of that season Bergara became the first County boss in history to lead a team out at Wembley Stadium when the team faced Stoke City in the Autoglass Final, in doing so he became the first manager born outside the UK, to lead an English club side out at The National Stadium. Following the Bradford City stadium fire in 1985, work began to remove all wooden structures and standing terraces from the stadium, which drastically reduced the capacity, but increased safety and ensured that the ground complied to Football League regulations. This work was eventually full completed by 2001. The Railway End being the last stand to be converted from a standing terrace to seating. The stadium's name is often simply abbreviated to 'EP' by fans.

Edgeley Park is the closest league football ground to the River Mersey – it is actually closer than Liverpool's Anfield, Everton's Goodison Park or Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park. While playing in Spain Bergara married an English travel guide, Jan, and when he retired from playing football they moved to England. For the 1998–99 season, he was named manager of Grantham Town, who had just won promotion to the Southern League Premier Division. A string of poor results saw Bergara become the club's Director of Football and the club's Chief Scout, Tony Kenworthy, becoming manager. Later he scouted for Sunderland. He got in touch with Luton because he wanted to train with the team to keep fit, but they initially said that he couldn’t. But Danny became friends with Paddy Sowden [Luton’s chief scout] and he saw these scrapbooks Jan had kept of Danny playing in Spain, which is when Paddy realised how good a player he was. So Paddy told the club they had to get Danny in – they wanted to sign him as a player at first.” Daniel Alberto Bergara de Medina (24 July 1942 – 25 July 2007) [2] was a Uruguayan footballer and manager.

Danny Bergara: The pioneering trailblazer who became England

Danny Bergara was a lorry loader. Or at least that’s what his work permit said when the Home Office stamped its approval for his first job in Britain. Having arrived in Division Three for the 1991/92 season, Danny’s team proved to be inspirational, starting as they meant to continue, with an opening day five-goal thrashing of Swansea City. The club finished the campaign in fifth place and gained a place in the end of season ‘play-offs’. In the late 1990s, after the recent major development at the Cheadle End of the ground, County chairman Brendan Elwood announced plans to rebuild the Railway End. The plan would have involved purchasing The Bungalow behind it, on which a hotel would have been built by Britannia Building Society, which would have overlooked the ground. However, like other Millennium-related projects, these plans never came to fruition. The first game saw England draw 2–2 with a Manchester City XI, and the second saw the England senior side defeat the England U23 side 1–0.
