The fact that so much of the storyline has stayed with me for so long is a testament to the novel in itself. I read a hell of a lot, however the way in which Herbert allowed the tale to descend into a pulpish horror-fest in almost the blink of an eye has remained with me ever since. Shape-shifting vampires, ageless succubi and demons that have existed for centuries are thrown into the chaotic mix of this maniacal roller-coaster of a ride.It's not as bad as I'm writing it to be, as I said. It's okay... Well, kinda. I'd be lying if I said that the ending isnt a mess. In fact the entire final third of this book just really lost me. I don't know if the publisher had a word count in mind or not but the ending chapters feel like an eternity. The pacing entirely goes off a cliff. For those who have read the book, I'm mainly talking about "The Fire". From "The Fire" until the end felt incredibly dull and drawn out. I just wanted it to end. Sadly, it did then end and I was left relieved that I could put the book down but also pretty disappointed at how the ideas here were left squandered. He was the weirdest, the nastiest. The Fog and The Rats terrified me; Creed was spoken about in my school in almost mythological ways, being both horrifying and introducing us to sexual concepts we'd never contemplated before that point; and The Magic Cottage, when given to me aged 13 by an amazing English teacher, was one of the books that made me want to become a writer. Herbert has created a really 'human' main character in the paparazzo, Creed, who finds himself drawn into a sinister world. It was Herbert's humour, the bits that made me laugh out loud, that made me continue to read. However, there were times that the scenes and dialogue seemed somewhat amateurish for such a renowned author and they reminded me of soap opera scripts. The storyline was interesting enough but it lapsed into farce now and then, and even for a book of this genre, fantasy/horror, it seemed far too over the top.

Preferably literally. there's no real explanation given for the lake 'monsters' (although horror fans can probably make up their own minds!)
