After Assange complained about the film, Poitras took it away, spent a year re-editing it – and returned with a film that was tougher on him. Was that her response to his intimidation; a form of revenge? Again, she exhales loudly and pauses. “I don’t make vengeful films, but I do have to make films that are honest.”

She says she’s exhausted and could do with a break, but she’s hooked on film-making: surveillance and the intelligence services in particular. What would she like to do next? “I’d love to look at what’s happening in the investigation into Trump. I don’t think I am going to get that access!” she laughs. “I don’t think Comey would take my phone call, unfortunately. He’d be top of the list of people I’d love to film at the moment.” Her Oscar-nominated film My Country, My Country, the first film in her Post-9/11 Trilogy, documents the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The second film of the trilogy, the Emmy-nominated The Oath, documents Guantanamo Bay Prison and the U.S. “war on terror.” Poitras] is clearly relishing the opportunity to play with space, to use sound and text ambitiously, and to choreograph her viewers"Big-picture time. I would assume that we are heading in the right direction when an administration that uses terms like “fake news” and “enemy of the people” to inflame its base goes away. But you made “Citizenfour” during the Obama Administration. Just how much do you think the situation in this country will improve for investigative journalism? Citizenfour is a documentary about Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor, who had leaked classified information about the agency's surveillance practices to the media after working in Geneva. Poitras was one of the journalists who worked with Snowden to publicize the information along with journalist Glenn Greenwald. [60] The movie premiered on October 10, 2014, at New York Film Festival. In 2014, Poitras told the Associated Press she was editing the film in Berlin because she feared her source material would be seized by the government inside the U.S. [61] Film executive Harvey Weinstein said Citizenfour had changed his opinion about Edward Snowden, describing the documentary as "one of the best movies, period." All the Beauty and the Bloodshed director Laura Poitras on

Her most recent film, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival where it won the Golden Lion, only the second documentary to win the top prize in the festival’s history. The film was nominated for an Academy Award, won an Independent Spirit Award, and was named best documentary of the year by New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics. Poitras and others described Assange's statements about women as "troubling". [67] [66] [68] Assange alleges in the film that he is the victim of a radical feminist conspiracy over his being wanted for questioning on sexual assault allegations by the Swedish authorities. [68] In the film, he argues that one of the women in question had potentially alternate motivation because she founded Gothenburg’s largest lesbian nightclub. [68] According to Poitras, Assange disapproved of the film because it included scenes showing his "troubling relationship with women". [66]Runner-up went to Alice Diop’s Saint Omer, the narrative debut from the documentarian about a young novelist observing the trial of a woman accused of infanticide.

The Other Side and The Ballad depict people living lives of enormous precarity, economic and otherwise. The loss of her friends to drug use and Aids weighs increasingly heavily on her work, in this film’s telling; the Goldin-curated exhibition Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing , which lost National Endowment for the Arts funding amid the uproar over David Wojnarowicz’s incendiary catalogue essay, gets significant screen-time here, and it is obvious that activist group Act Up was an inspiration for Pain’s die-ins at the Guggenheim Museum and Musée du Louvre. Her other films include Risk, Flag Wars, Project X, Death of a Prisoner, The Program, Triple-Chaser, and Terror Contagion. Biennale Cinema 2022 | All the Beauty and the Bloodshed". Laura Poitras: Astro Noiseisthe first solo museum exhibition by artist, filmmaker, and journalist Laura Poitras. This immersive installation of new work builds on topics important to Poitras, including mass surveillance, the war on terror, the U.S. drone program, Guantánamo Bay Prison, occupation, and torture. Some of these issues have been investigated in her films, including Citizenfour, which won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Documentary, and in her reporting, which was awarded a 2014 Pulitzer Prize. The filmmakers created a safety net. “Nan and I could speak really freely,” said Poitras. “And she would have an opportunity later before it would be shared with anyone wider to see if there was anything that went too far. And when we had a cut, before we showed even Diane, nobody saw anything until Nan could have the opportunity to hear. There wasn’t really anything that she asked us to remove from the film.” Poitras helped to produce stories exposing previously secret U.S. intelligence activities, which earned her the 2013 Polk award [42] and contributed to the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service awarded jointly to The Guardian and The Washington Post. [ citation needed] [43] She later worked with Jacob Appelbaum and writers and editors at Der Spiegel to cover disclosures about mass surveillance, particularly those relating to NSA activity in Germany. [44] [45] She later revealed in her documentary Risk that she had a brief romantic relationship with Appelbaum. [46]
