So if you’re noticing a sudden change in your baby’s behaviour then you should cycle through the usual possibilities – growth spurt, developmental leap, sleep regression, teething– and add bottle flow rate to the list!

Variable – features an adjustable flow rate that can be change between 1 and 3 by turning the bottle. After this experience, I decided after reading online that many babies don’t need to increase the teat size that he must be ones of those babies, but then, not long later, Dexter started displaying a few key signs that he was indeed ready to move up to a faster flowing teat. Teats take quite a lot of hammering from little gums and teeth, so they need to be changed regularly. We recommend replacing teats every 2 months or at the first sign of any damage or weakness. Can I buy bottles with faster flowing teats?Appropriate if your child has shown consistent feeding with no difficulties and is taking larger amounts at the breast and bottle. As a baby’s feeding develops and they are taking a longer time feeding from a Level 1 teat, many parents choose to move up to a Level 2 teat. While most bottles offer various teat levels that are tied to an age range (for example, 3 months+), every infant has their own feeding style, which is not necessarily a reflection of their age or size. Dexter was around six months old when I changed the teats in his bottle from size 2 to size 3. I had previously attempted to change him to the bigger teats around a month before, but had failed spectacularly. Milk had spilled everywhere, he had choked, gagged, spat out the milk and finally started clamping his mouth shut.

Step 2: Fill the base with silicone valve with 20 ml of cool water. The protective cap makes a practical measuring cup. Perfect for travelling babies and parents, the MAM Self-Sterilising baby bottles can be sterilised in just three minutes using a microwave. Pour 20ml water in the base of the container, arrange the components on the top (don't screw!) and in minutes your baby's bottles are safe to use. Just to showcase how much flow rate varies by manufacturer, here is a guide to some of the bigger brands teat flows. If you’re wondering whether you should change the teat flow, this gives you a rough guide of flow speed by age: Flow rate

The MAM Baby range features four different flow sizes for teats. Confusingly their final size is called Size x, not size 4, and is an extra fast flow according to the manufacturer. You almost don’t notice how much a teat can have become worn until you switch to a brand new one and feel the difference. Final thoughts on changing flow speeds

As a baby’s feeding develops and they are taking a longer time feeding from a Level 3 teat, many parents choose to move up to a Level 4 teat.A Level 1 or newborn teat generally comes on every bottle and is a great starting point for many babies. With newborns, especially premature babies, the teat flow rate can actually be faster than your infant can tolerate. If your baby is exhibiting any of these signs while eating, you may want to try a slower flow (lower level) teat: If your baby is struggling with their feeds – spluttering, choking coughing – or on the other side of the spectrum becoming agitated and fussy while eating, it could be time to change teats. Wondering when to change teat size? Not sure if your baby is ready? There are a few key signs baby needs a faster flow teat. Find out more about our experience in changing Dexter’s teat size and the signs that showed us he was ready. When should you change the teat size?

This will vary depending on the manufacturer – as there is no industry standard for teat sizes. When should I change from medium to fast flow teats? With my two babies I sometimes changed at just the right moment before they even showed any signs of needing to and it was seamless. The Philips Avent teats come in six different sizes. The smallest of which is ideal for preemie babies, and the range goes up to a fast flow. If you’re unsure if they’re ready, rest assured there’s no exact science to when it’s time to change up the flow rate on your baby’s bottle.

Step 1: Assemble clean bottle parts as follows: base with silicone valve, teat with screw ring, bottle body and protective cap. Comfort for your baby is vital, and our baby feeding bottles feature the MAM SkinSoft teat, which has a 94% acceptance rate*. Knowing when to move to the next teat level is an important – and sometimes confusing – part of a comfortable and happy feeding experience for you and your baby. When it comes to deciding on changing baby’s teat you can assess both the signs they’re ready as well as their age before taking the leap. However in other instances I was stumped as to why their feeding had suddenly gone haywire and they were more agitated.
