Description

Unfortunately, the story leaned a bit too heavily toward the horror side of things, and I found myself pretty dissatisfied . Also have to point out how stunning the use of art in this was - I can't stop thinking about Immy's relationship with art as a way of seeking connection with the world around her and making peace with her own immortality.

My vampire loving heart started to race when I saw this book because all things vampires are my thing. This tightly plotted, expertly choreographed tale unfolds in alternating chapters from the perspectives of Hanna and Suzette. The early plot twists were pretty disturbing but unfortunately, as I kept reading, I started to see this novel spiral downward for me. Literature has a dark sorority of bad, creepy, and cruel girls, which now includes seven-year-old Hanna Hansen .

If Hanna's daddy would have believed immediately that her daughter hurts her mommy then it wouldn't have been a book because that was the whole point. This family is extremely dysfunctional and I kept wondering throughout the book what the real reasons for Hanna’s behaviors were. Black holes were dangerous; they absorbed everything around them, and maybe some parts of her that she needed would tumble into the abyss.

Her follow-up novel, Wonderland, was described in a starred review from Booklist as "a beautifully choreographed and astonishing second novel. I thought it was brilliant and since this was the first novel I’ve ever read by Stage, I was impressed. It has generated a whole lot of buzz on social media and has garnered tons of reviews here on Goodreads. Her relationship with Claudia was so tender and tentative, a careful negotiation of allowing softness in a world made of edges. A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people.
