This condition overwhelms her and stops her from being able to communicate with others and find her way easily. Alice starts wearing sunglasses to school, the teachers don’t understand why she needs them inside and they suggest she attends Clearview Academy. If you asked me how I felt reading it, I'd say it tugged at my heartstrings but it also left me a bit confused - what was the point?

The book discusses everything from self-discovery to complicated family relationships, neglectful parents, and a love story. She is already living with her two brothers and mother, who is deep in her own mental health issues, and as time goes by, she finds herself caring for her wheelchair-bound mother, living a life she is coping with but suffocating herself as well. I’m drawn to writing about transitional moments in our lives when we leave behind the person we were and through tragedy, trauma or whatever life challenges we’re faced with, we move to the next version of ourselves. I knew that it was not going to be the case for every single book for the rest of my life and so I was embracing the moment and enjoying it as much as I possibly could. For a novel centring on colours, I’m afraid this was terribly bland, or hummus as Ahern might describe it.Sie lebt zusammen mit ihren zwei Brüdern und ihrer Mutter, die sich aber nicht sonderlich um ihre Kinder kümmert und an einer bipolaren Störung leidet. It felt a bit like a mega serial (soap opera) with an extraordinary person since the mini-events happened to be nothing life changing or from a novel form story line altering.

Freckles was about a young woman trying to work out ‘who’ she was through those with whom she’s connected. Synaesthesia is an interesting condition and it has worked well as a plot device in a few books that I’ve read in recent years, but hanging the entire story on synaesthesia is not really a runner. In all honesty, I had fallen out of love a little with Cecelia Ahern’s books which was really disappointing as some of her early books are my favourite reads. I felt perhaps the pacing was a bit inconsistent though at the same time recognise Ahern slowed to focus on certain moments in Alice’s life… fast forwarding through others. She "knows" strangers just at a first meeting and scans them like an x-ray to discover who they are.

Alice’s gift leads to problems at school and she gets sent to a boarding school for difficult children where she makes 2 good friends who we briefly meet again once Alice has moved to London and is trying to find a job she can do. Despite some very dark subject matter, particularly involving Alice's mother and her younger brother, this was a delight to read.

In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern Book review: In a Thousand Different Ways by Cecelia Ahern

Alice wears a mask, sunglasses, gloves, and she won't shake anyone's hand and this comes across as her being rather strange.I loved Alice's journey throughout this book although there were times where I did get confused as multiple timeframes were discussed. An interesting plot and characters you could visualise, don’t want to give things away but I felt I was “ seeing “ too, it was so well described .
