The opening segment is an impressive recreation of the filmmaking techniques John Carpenter used in the late 1970s, even down to the period appropriate synth score. It's definitely the second part of a trilogy, and a key component is lost, but Halloween Kills still mostly works. First of all, Season of the Witch firmly establishes itself as separate from the first two Halloween movies by showing those movies playing on TV as part of a Halloween night marathon. The sequel had its flaws as well but this sequel attempts to change the layout of the series but in the end it becomes one of the mind numbing sequels it attempted to avoid.

However, after two movies featuring Michael Myers as the main villain, it was somewhat confusing for fans to see a third Halloween movie that had nothing to do with the previous entries. Secondly, Halloween III ends with its main character failing to stop Silver Shamrock's commercial from playing, with the implication that millions of children across the United States are killed by the masks. Even if there's nothing more to it than that, however, it will be interesting to see if the upcoming sequel includes more elements from Halloween III: Season of the Witch, such as Silver Shamrock's hellishly catchy commercial jingle, or the "big giveaway" at 9pm on Halloween night. It's a great reference to the original, but at the same time, only one the most hardcore series devotees are likely to notice. Not only is the body count higher, but Michael as a character feels more genuine to himself than ever before. Audiences at the time dismissed this as a cheeky throwaway moment in a film that’s clearly more light-hearted than the previous two entries. We're still watching a man pushing 70 years of age defy multiple stab wounds, bullets, contusions and beatings, and any number of aggressive defensive violence. The logical conclusion is that the thief was Michael Myers, presumably right after he got back to Haddonfield. If you can get past the repetitiveness as I did, Halloween Kills is a solid sequel and if the ending of this film says anything about next year's Halloween Ends, I"m very excited to see how this all comes to an end.

A FL native, Michael is passionate about pop culture, and earned an AS degree in film production in 2012. S. Capital insurrection, watching a sea of angry, misinformed citizens run wild in misplaced fear and loathing. If you're a sucker for the Halloween franchise, or the glut of slasher movies that have exploded in the age of streaming, then perhaps enough of the crimson stuff gets spilled to satiate your horror appetites. Aside from the hospital, a few scenes on the streets, the police precinct, and some homes, this is a very confined movie.

These masks were also seen in 2018's Halloween, but this is the first time that the Silver Shamrock tag (which, in Halloween III, contains the mechanism that kills the wearer) has been shown on them. In the end, Jamie Lee Curtis is solid once again as Laurie Strode (even though she doesn't have much to do here) and all of the supporting cast is doing their best. With Halloween Kills, I'm watching a dull silent killer slowly murder disposable supporting characters and none of it qualifies as interesting. If there's a star of this 2021 sequel, it's Anthony Michael Hall (Live by Night) as the leader of the town's mob.

Too late, he realizes that the masks are designed to inflict a horrible death on anyone who wears them, and are activated by a commercial that's set to play at 9pm on Halloween night. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael's first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. While some assume Michael used the stolen rope to rig up the moment where Bob Simms - not to be confused with Halloween Kills cameo actor Bob Odenkirk - body comes swinging out of a closet, that's not confirmed in the movie and the rope is never seen onscreen. I think the original Halloween from 1978 is a very solid slasher flick, but it also feels very dated today. More than half of this film is devoted to a storyline that involves the survivors of the original 1978 film and that was easily my favourite portion of the film, even though most of their dialogue was very clunky and overwritten.

Halloween Kills has freed itself from the burning basement of pandemic delays to tease the further rebooted rampages of masked maniac Michael Myers. After all, the notion of Season of the Witch existing as a movie in Halloween Kills also means that the film’s TV spot shout-out—identifying 1978’s original Halloween—is also applicable, creating a bizarre Halloween-ception dynamic in which the current franchise takes place in a universe containing a film ( Season of the Witch) in which a film within that film ( Halloween) chronicles events pertinent to what’s taking place here. Likewise, while Halloween Kills is several continuity degrees removed from the 1982 threequel, its inclusion of the signature trio of Silver Shamrock masks might just indicate a reversal of the dynamic, establishing that Season of the Witch exists in the current Blumhouse-co-produced franchise as a fictional film; one that might have spawned its own accompanying mask merchandise, which Michael could have appropriated for his own murderous piece of conceptual art. One sequence that seems to unite most opinions on Halloween Kills is the 1978 flashback sequence revealing how Michael Myers was arrested after getting shot six times by Dr.
