Description

It takes an already good, distinct tasting whiskey, and makes it better in every way without changing what it already is.

The ones that I really try to hunt down are their Heritage Barrel releases, which have featured tons of banana bread notes that I rarely find in any other whiskey. With that, Jack Daniel’s Triple Mash Blended Straight Whiskey is definitely one of the more interesting flavor profiles in the Jack Daniel’s brand profile.Jack has had a rye whiskey expression for a few years now, but I did not realize they were making malt whiskey, let alone 100 percent malt whiskey. Jack Daniel’s new Bonded Tennessee Whiskey and Triple Mash Blended Straight Whiskey represent the first two permanent expressions in the brand’s new Bonded Series. While I tend to believe that the company is working overtime to remain as relevant as they have been for over 100 years, I am happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed both expressions and found them to be both classic and contemporary. Jack Daniel’s has been a lot like how Maker’s Mark has operated when it comes to their brand offering. Triple Mash is a Bottled-in-Bond whiskey, which means that it must be distilled by a single distiller during a single distillation season, matured in a government bonded warehouse for at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).

That trademark banana bread is present, along with some tannic spice, brandied cherry, leather wallet and bitter cocoa powder notes, followed by a pleasantly hot finish. This from the company who shied away from even releasing their standard whiskey at a different proofpoint a mere decade ago. It also means that these will be available regularly, so I am not guilty of stealing these from true squires.Tennessee Whiskey , however according to the company barrels used for Bonded “are hand-selected for their characteristics of deeper color, flavor, and aroma, which deliver a darker, richer, and more oak-forward character. Spice meets cookie dough on the nose, with a touch of peppery rye evident along with a hint of gunpowder.

At times, those methods do work to develop flavors that stray from the mainstream, and this year’s Bonded series works to make a good argument for the distiller’s recipe. Intense maple sugar candy meets a mixture of caramel, toasted marshmallow, and burnt oak at the onset. The finish is more warming than the Bonded, with a little less cohesiveness to it, though it’s never short of engaging. Erring heavily on the sweeter side, the intensity is propped up by the proof, allowing the flavors to hit the high sweet notes with a sturdy, but welcome, backing of heat. Despite being bottled at the same proof, the Triple Mash stands out with its enhanced body and bolder taste, all without sacrificing smoothness or becoming harsh.Vital Stats: Blend of three straight Bottled-in-Bond whiskeys – 60% Jack Daniel’s Tennessee rye, 20% Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey, 20% Jack Daniel’s American malt. On the palate, it offers a decent texture, beginning with a prominent banana note, and transitioning to sweet corn, Cherry Coke-like flavor, and subtle pecan undertones. With Jack Daniel’s Triple Mash, they take their Tennessee whiskey and blend it with their rye, and more shockingly, their American malt. Master Distiller Chris Fletch has said of the series, “Jack Daniel’s Bonded and Triple Mash are a nod to our heritage with a touch of innovation and craftsmanship. Since the change, all has been quiet on the American Whiskey front when it comes to bottle size…until now.
