Description

In New York Zoo, a 1-5 player eurogame designed by Uwe Rosenberg and published by Feverland, you take on the role of zoo designers. S. Navy and the other as pirates in the First Barbary War, at the very start of the 19th century, with the pirates trying to steal all of the U. There will either be tiles and so you must place the topmost tile on your personal zoo board OR there will be two animals on the space and you then collect both of those animals (you may place animals inside enclosures if you wish – up to 2 per turn).

New York Zoo Review | Board Games - Zatu Games UK

With over a thousand new board games released each year—a pace that seems unsustainable, even with demand still growing—any game with an unusual or entirely new mechanic gets a leg up amidst the sea of worker-placement and deckbuilding titles. Legacy games have been in vogue for a few years, but it’s hard for such titles, especially conversions of existing properties, to keep interest up over eight to 24 plays.

Many small nuances create a trademark tight and tactical game, very akin to Patchwork, another tile-placement small game by Uwe. It is possible that adding one (or both) of these animals to your Enclosure tiles might cause those tiles to become full. This game incorporates different mechanisms that work well together to create an interesting experience that’s more in-depth than Uwe Rosenberg’s lighter games, but not as heavy as some of his larger economic games.

You can only breed in up to 2 enclosures within your zoo at a time and breeding happens simultaneously for all players. What other game can you say has your mother-in-law trying to sell you on the idea that her flamingo is an evolutionary anomaly that can asexually reproduce? Games are never going to be greatly different from each other, but I still think New York Zoo has good replayability due to the abstract nature of play. The attraction tiles are the same quality and are well detailed and really pop against the enclosure tiles (Figure 5).

And this is important because the goal of the game is to be the first player to fill in your board entirely and those Attraction tiles will help you fill in the holes left by your Enclosure tile placements. Thus if a tile shows an objective of three red symbols, you can place one red tile adjacent to it, and then create a chain with two more red tiles, and score it without the latter two tiles touching the one with the objective. Maybe you’ve been playing more games this year because you’ve been home more often—or are looking for more games to play because you’re stuck at home. There is iconography on the board to try to remind you but first time players still needed a slight nudge. They have to make do with half-finished plots, where flamingos can pray on the unwary penguins and the meerkats and kangaroos form gangs to bully the arctic foxes. If the elephant passes a breeding spot, anyone with those animals in their enclosures get to add a couple more. From Leder Games, the publishers of Root and Vast, comes a lighter, small-box deckbuilder with fantastic art and a fast-playing game, as each player tries to assemble the best tree fort to attract neighborhood kids. Do this a few times and these frisky friends will produce enough foxes to fill your enclosure and earn you an attraction tile. If you are on an animal acquisition space you take the two listed animals and place them either into empty houses, enclosures with that type of animal already present or into empty (that have been previously filled) enclosures on your board.
