About this deal

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the women I was talking to said that it’s helpful for women to grow things. Raw and incredibly emotive, this is a must read for anyone who wants to understand modern conflicts and the myriad of ways in which civilians across the world suffer. At the very end of Christina Lamb’s devastating account of rape in modern conflict, she wonders why women’s names are not written on war memorials. But its main town, Lakki, was a study in Stalinist art deco, all wide avenues and sharp-angled villas in stark concrete, with a colonnaded cinema, a circular marketplace, a school that resembled an agricultural silo, a minimalist clock tower, as well as buildings that looked like a UFO and an old-fashioned transistor radio. It was the Yazidis that really impacted me, because those girls had been taken very young, and had been traded in latter day slave markets with ISIS fighters who had come and chosen them.

Our Bodies, Their Battlefield by Christina Lamb review – the

I would say in more recent years, I realized that there were not so many women reporting these things and that I had a responsibility to tell those stories. The camp where these Yazidis are living is more than a thousand miles from their homeland under the tall sacred mountain between Iraq and Syria on which they believe Noah’s Ark came to rest. Speaking to survivors first-hand, Lamb encounters the suffering and bravery of women in war and meets those fighting for justice. More recently, journalists and medical staff have reported mass rape in Bosnia, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where even babies have been sexually abused, earning the country the sobriquet “the rape capital of the world”.

Our Bodies, Their Battlefields : War Through the Lives of Women

Everyone applauded but nothing happened,” regrets the Congolese doctor Dr Denis Mukwege, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 along with the Yazidi activist Nadia Murad, who survived being sexually enslaved and many of her family members murdered by Islamic State in 2014.A searing, absolutely necessary expose of the uses of rape in recent wars and of global injustices to the survivors. Prievartaujama ir kankinama dažnai neslepiant, kad taip daro dėl to, jog moterys niekada gyvenime nebenorėtų turėti santykių su vyrais, vaikų, gyventi. And yet, despite the ubiquity of rape across time and in all continents and all settings, almost nothing is written about those who have experienced sexual violence.
