The canopy spanning the headband is made from a breathable knitted mesh, distributing weight to reduce on-head pressure. Higher frequencies are well balanced with the rest of the presentation and lead to what most will think of as a comfortable sound. Built for an audience with cash to burn, it’s very apparent that a lot of design love went into creating them. Using built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers, AirPods Max and your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV track the subtle motion of your head, anchoring sounds to your device.Detail is not sacrificed however and as with the midrange, there is a certain crispness here which grabs the attention. The Bowers and Wilkins P9 Signature has been tried with pretty much everything and provides a nice touch with all genres. Wearing the band too lose can be quite uncomfortable, and even a perfect fit can wear on you after a while. Press the noise control button to switch to Transparency mode, which lets outside sound in so you can interact naturally with your surroundings. However they’ve taken a break from their black and silver theme and gone over to the brown side, giving the P9 even more of an executive feel.

Testing conducted by Apple in November 2020 using pre‑production AirPods Max and software paired with iPhone 12 Pro Max units and pre‑release software. Works with AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with the latest firmware when paired with a compatible Apple device with the latest operating system software. Space is there in spades and there is no danger of congestion with more complicated or busy passages. The P9 comes with a generous three cables; two of which are short for portable use (one with mic/controls) and a long 3m cable for enjoying music at home. AirPods Pro (2nd generation) are dust resistant and sweat and water resistant for non-water sports and exercise, and are IP54 rated.

It’s easy to pinpoint individual instruments and the instruments themselves are very nicely rendered thanks to the clear midrange and treble, enhancing the 3D effect. Because these headphones don’t isolate all that well, audio quality will suffer noticeably in the presence of outside noise (much more so than it does with other headphones). That’s fine though, as the traditional consumer sound can be really grating to younger ears (read: anyone under 40) with its enormous bump to sounds in the 9-11kHz range. As mentioned above, the colour of the Bowers and Wilkins P9 Signature has been changed from the familiar black we have all come to know, and the basic design of the headband has changed as well. It is a little more hefty than previous models, but the weight is by no means excessive and once in use barely noticable.
