About this deal

Having made a few of these designs, my advice would be to always label your pattern pieces, use more notches than you've ever used before and number the corresponding notches. Intimidating and inspirational at the same time, Pattern Magic is not so much a "read" as a "see and ponder. This dress below, from Pattern Magic ,is one design thatI found to require numerousnumbered notches since once you've dissected the pattern and cut it out of fabric, matching the curves becomes a lot more tricky.

I can imagine many of the designs makingup a part of a red carpet outfit or to be worn at a Sunday brunch just by using different fabrics.I would be lying if I said these books are good for a beginner as you need some knowledge of pattern cutting and sewing to be able to use and understand the processes required to make the designs. Every time you look through them you'll see new ideas and each book provides infinite design inspiration, they're definitely value for money. It’s mostly flat-patternmaking, although many times it looks like one would have to drape to get such results.

One of the fellow-students had brought the first two books with her in class and we were all leafing through them, amazed by the designs. For example, this front top section below, from Pattern Magic , could create a beautiful bodice section for a silk dress or the perfect front of a top in a light cotton fabric. There’s a chapter on accordion-technique, with examples of that being inserted both in a sleeve and into a bodice. These are normally separate parts in a garment, but in this case they are drafted partly into the bodice-pattern, which makes it look like they’re vanishing. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in. This and the top above are just two of many designs in the books that can be incorporated with other ideas or can be used to create a feature for a simple garment. I can't show you these books without showing you one of my favourite ideas, 'a vanishing pocket', as shown below from Pattern Magic 2.The relationship between the flat pattern pieces and the three-dimensional structure of the garment never changes. It's such an intriguing design,at first look the pocket looks normaland then upon looking again it just disappearsinto the garment. Gives all the basic information needed to start pattern cutting: from the basic block to measurements and scaling. That way you have the possibility to make all kinds of different versions of your own using the various techniques explained.

I made a different version by inserting the knots on the shoulders of a bodice and added some gathering, too. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. It's such an intriguing design, at first look the pocket looks normal and then upon looking again it just disappears into the garment. Taking inspiration from nature, from geometric shapes, and from the street, this book harnesses the sheer joy of making and sculpting clothes.

It looks like play but the success of each design relies upon the precise measurements of the basic simple garment being manipulated. I had an idea that I wanted the overlapping area to create a flower-shape in the middle by leaving little holes in between the slices. Every time you look through them you'll see new ideas and each book provides infinite design inspiration, they're definitely valuefor money. Taking inspiration from nature, from geometric shapes and from the street, this book harnesses the sheer joy of making and sculpting clothes. The author, who was a professor at Bunka Fashion College, shows how very complex and unusual sculptural effects can be added to simple garments through experimental manipulation of paper.
