About this deal

The most enchanting debut novel of 2018, this is an irresistible, deeply moving and romantic story of a young girl, daughter of an abusive father, who has to learn the hard way that she can break the patterns of the past, live on her own terms and find her own strength. Included are some of the most stunning black and white prints of native Australian flowers I have ever encountered in a novel. The director is so painstaking in capturing every frame and giving it a timeless, storybook quality. Honestly, the second part of the novel is a rushed jumble, which I found even more irritating since I was so taken with the first two hundred pages.

Alice Hart / The Lost Flowers of Alice Las flores perdidas de Alice Hart / The Lost Flowers of Alice

Character development is strong within this novel and we get a full range of personalities and interactions. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is on the one hand a simple story about a young girl with an abusive father and a withdrawn, embittered grandmother. Sigourney Weaver was announced as starring and executive producing, with Sarah Lambert show running and executive producing, Glendyn Ivin as director and executive producer, and Jodi Matterson, Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Allie Goss also executive producing.

Fearing for the life of her pregnant mother, Alice's desire to set her father on fire is something of a coping mechanism for her, and likely offers her a feeling of control.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart - Pan Macmillan

After living between Australia and the UK for ten years, Holly has been based in the hinterland of Queensland since 2020, where she wrote The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding in her 'office', a vintage caravan named Frenchie. The story follows Alice Hart, a young girl who becomes orphaned by a mysterious fire and moves in with her estranged grandmother, only to grow up and discover that there's more to her life story than she previously thought. She moved to England in 2009 and obtained her MA in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester in 2011.

Family secrets are buried deeper than the flowers' roots and, if she is to have the freedom she craves, she must find the courage to unearth the most powerful story she knows: her own. When Alice was nine years old, something horrific occurs which will see her sent to live on a wildflower farm, with her paternal grandmother she didn't know existed. Alice has no idea where she’s going to go and she ends up in the desert of the Northern Territory and where the sturt's desert peas flower nine months of the year. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers Australia for the preview copy from which I’ve quoted. Pe toate, poate cuprinde absolut tot ce i se dă, chiar dacă uneori se simte de parcă ar da cineva cu o daltă în ea și s-ar despica de durere sau prea multă fericire copleșitoare.

The plot of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is triggered by a decisive event that will need to be explained in a full recap. It is a fierce and assured piece of writing that makes a solid commentary on family dynamics, domestic drama and self discovery. She starts to document the flowers she sees and what they mean but then falls in love with a man not unlike her father who is cruel and controlling.

Alice always felt like she was waiting for something that’s just never going to come, in the end she discovers whats missing and it’s due to the big secret that's been kept from her and she can't keep running forever. The peripheral characters, in particular the women Alice encounters in her life, reminds the audience of the true nature of friendship and loyalty. A young girl loses both her parents in a tragic event, and is taken to live with her grandmother on a flower farm. We discover that Agnes has decided in her will that June will have custody of Alice, but if there are doubts about her capacity to care for her, the custody will go to Sally, the librarian.

Upon publication, The Seven Skins of Esther Wilding became an instant national bestseller, and it was named 2022 Book of the Year by Booktopia. On 16 August 2023, Mediaweek reported that the series set a record for highest viewership of an Australian series worldwide. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart spans twenty years, you follow Alice growing up and a unique coming of age story, as an adult and she doesn’t want to make the same mistakes as her mother. Grandmother June shares no information with Alice but remembers (for us) her own mother and grandmother and the men who were a problem. Alice settles in living with her nana, she goes to school for the first time and all the women at the flower farm mother her.Young actress, Layla Brown, shows an impressive emotional range - not easy when depicting many scenes without speaking. Prior to the pandemic, Holly divided her time between Australia and the UK, where she had Australian native flowers growing in both places. Growing up, Alice learns the language of Australian native flowers as a way to say the things that are too hard to speak. I have a feeling that The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is destined to remain by my side for some time yet. That’s why Holly Ringland’s novel of the same name became an international hit, attracting one of our best-living actresses to director Glendyn Ivin and creator Sarah Lambert's adaptation.
