Ridley Hall was named in honour of Bishop Nicholas Ridley, a leading Protestant theologian of the sixteenth century. Hill, Christopher (1979). Milton and the English Revolution. Ridley's family were not going to risk their son ending his life in a scrappy defense of the family's cattle, and so Nicholas was sent to school in Newcastle, where he excelled in Latin. Joseph Hall (1 July 1574–8 September 1656) was an English bishop, satirist and moralist. His contemporaries knew him as a devotional writer, and a high-profile controversialist of the early 1640s.
