Once Done, Never Forgotten: Rose remembers David, one of Indigo's former bullies, when he comes asking for help. The Casson children have several friends -- Sarah, Tom, and David -- who come to be like members of the family. How did each of these friendships begin? Early in the book, Saffy realizes that all of the kids in the family have names found on a color chart in the Casson kitchen, except for her. When she presses her mother for an explanation, she learns that she was not named by Eve and Bill, because she is not biologically their child. Rather, Saffy's mother is Eve's deceased sister, and she was adopted into the family after her mother's death. This information really isolates Saffy, and when her grandfather dies and leaves her a mysterious angel in his will, she becomes even more curious about her past.

Hell the story could have been even stronger if she was in care of someone not of blood at all but the fact that her mother's sister was willing to take her in as her own (WHICH DOESN'T MAKE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE SINCE THE MOTHER AND SISTER WERE TWINS) is very thoughtful. But Saffy denies this and she denies all the love her parents give her. It's only until the end of the whole damn book does she realize it. Wow. One day Saffy looks on the paint chart and can't find her name. Her siblings names are all on there: Cadmium Gold, Indigo, and, Permanent Rose. When her beloved grandfather dies, Saffron finds out she is really adopted and that her mother is Eve Casson ( Caddy, Rose and Indy's mum)'s identical twin sister (by the way this is NOT a spoiler). In her grandad's will she is left a stone angel. It was a painter's color chart, from an artists' materials shop. It showed all the colors a painter could ever need. There were rows and rows of little squares, each a different shade of red or blue or green or golden yellow. Every little square had the name of the color underneath. To the Casson children those names were as familiar as nursery rhymes. Other families had lullabies, but the Cassons had fallen asleep to lists of colors. We are!’ cried Eve. ‘Of course we are! Gentle Giant: David, Indigo's friend in Permanent Rose, who formerly had bullied Tom and Indigo with the rest of the rabble. Caddy was the only one of the Casson children who could recall the days when their grandfather could drive and walk and talk and do things like anybody else. She told Saffron about the evening when he had arrived at the house, bringing Saffron home.
